Beyond Early Warning

From statistical warning signals to the question of effective self-correction

Detecting a warning signal is not the same as knowing whether a system can still correct itself.

What is distinctive?

Conventional early-warning signals can indicate statistical changes preceding critical transitions. BenchEWS proposes an explicit separation between signal detection, inference about resilience, corrective-feedback degradation, intervention delay and actual loss of corrective capacity. A warning signal alone is not proof of impaired self-correction. Where the evidence is insufficient, the framework requires abstention rather than an unsupported diagnosis.

Scientific status

This is a falsifiable methodological research proposal, not an independently validated diagnostic instrument. Incremental predictive value and earlier detection remain hypotheses requiring controlled comparisons and independent replication.
